Airport Residential Area

Description

This sparsely populated, quiet residential area is located about 10km northeast of the city centre close to Kotoka International Airport and it is largely inhabited by rich Ghanaians and foreigners. It has numerous offices including those of international NGOs and many embassies are located here too. Housing is mostly in low-rise apartment blocks built during the colonial era and renovated to meet modern standards. Most properties have security guards. The roads are good and lined with trees, making the area feel breezy and cool. There is a reasonable number of schools and shops, but goods tend to be expensive. Local public transport services are poor and most residents own a car. However, trotros run along Liberation Road bordering Airport Residential Area to the east, which leads straight into town. To the north are the Kwame Nkrumah motorway the only highway in the country, linking Accra to Tema, Ghanas main deepwater port, 25 km east of the capital and the newly constructed Tetteh Quarshie interchange, named after the man who imported cocoa from Fernando Po (now Bioko in today's Equatorial Guinea) in the 1870s. Ghana is now the world's second largest cocoa producer after Ivory Coast.
