St Saviour

Description

To the south of St Martin, St Saviour is the only parish without any lovely beaches. It is one of the island’s largest parishes and combines an urban community, on the edges of St Helier, with a rural population in the middle of the island. The housing in the urban sprawl close to St Helier is mainly early 20th-century terrace houses, giving way to 1950s bungalows and semi-detached houses in the Five Oaks area. Traffic here is congested, especially at school rush hours as most of the island’s private secondary schools are in this area. The central part of the parish (Five Oaks) is mainly a commercial area with warehouses for the building trade and the island’s main newspaper, the “Jersey Evening Post”. In the south-east of the parish is the trading estate of Rue des Pres. This has done much to decentralise warehousing facilities out of St Helier but has led to an increase in traffic in the surrounding area. At the northern end of the parish there is fertile flat grazing land for cattle and some attractive little valleys.
