Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

Description

The last town to be incorporated into the city of Barcelona, Sarri has kept most of its historic centre intact. In fact the main street of the old town, the Carrer Major de Sarri, is still the backbone of the areas shopping district, lined with traditional, family-run businesses looking just as they did 50 or so years ago. Sarri is mainly a prosperous, middle-class residential and commercial area, however a large percentage of Barcelonas artisans and craftspeople have their ateliers in the district as well. Like most of Barcelona, it is well connected by public transport, various bus routes and a railway line linking it to the centre and the surrounding districts. A car park has recently been opened to cater to out-of town shoppers. Further northwards, the Sant-Gervasi district extends up to the foothills of the Collserola mountains, the largest nature park in Barcelona. Spread along both sides of the Carrer Muntaner, the long, straight avenue running from downtown right up to the hills, this neighbourhood is home to the citys wealthy upper-middle class and is where the young, beautiful and rich of Barcelona can be found in Sant-Gervasis many fashionable bars and discotheques. Served by two urban train lines and a fairly comprehensive bus network, the district also boasts many important hospitals and clinics, as well as the head offices of various businesses. A large number of primary and secondary schools are located here, some housed in the century-old country mansions dotted among the Collserola hills. Overlooking the city is the Amusement Park and the Sacred Heart Church on Tibidabo, the highest peak in the Collserola range (512 metres).
