With its beautiful 19th-century town houses, Charlottenburg is at the high end of the real estate market and is popular with celebrities. However, the presence of many students from the local Berlin Technical University slightly undermines the truly up-market feel. The district is home to one of Germanys first shopping centres, the Europa Centre, which was built in the 1960s. The local Savignyplatz with its bars and restaurants is a popular meeting place, especially during the summer. The district also contains one of the historical highlights of Berlin, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedchtniskirche (memorial church), which suffered heavy damage during the Second World War. Charlottenburg Castle is the centre-piece of the area and is often used for state dinners, but it is open for visits by locals and tourists as well. Its opulent gardens are the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll. Charlottenburg is also rich in museums, such as the Egyptian Museum, the Brhan Museum and the Berggruen Collection. The S3, S5, S7 and S9 overground trains cross Charlottenburg from Zoo station to the fairground and the U2 and U9 underground lines and the S41/42 ring train also converge here. The central bus station (ZOB) and Zoo station - Berlin's most important intercity railway station are also located here, while Tegel airport lies to the north.
