Hohenschonhausen

Description

Hohenschnhausen in the north-east is a modern district dating from the 1980s, with numerous parks making it a suitable area for families with children. Culturally speaking, and well worth a visit, is the building on Obersee lake designed by the Bauhaus architect Mies van der Rohe. The district is also sadly renowned for the former prison and torture chambers used by the Stasi, East Germanys secret police, which have now been turned into a museum and are a grim reminder of some of the worst excesses of the East German regime. There is a nature reserve on the Fauler See lake, proof that green belts can still thrive in the midst of the urban lanscape. The area also boasts one of Berlins best multi-purpose sports facilities.  The S75 overground runs directly to the city centre, while a network of tram lines (3, 4, 5, 13, 15, 26, 28) serves the local area. Regional trains stop at Hohenschnhausen station on their way to Lichtenberg and Zoo.
