Prenzlauer Berg

Description

Prenzlauer Berg is an old working-class district in former East Berlin that survived the very heavy bombing during the Second World War. Even during the Communist era, the quarter in the north-east of the city centre was synonomous with artists and writers and cultural activity. After the reunification of Germany the area was completely redeveloped and quickly became gentrified and it is now popular with wealthy west Germans. There is a vibrant night life and many students from the nearby Humboldt University come to spend the evening here. The area still attracts artists from all over Europe. One of Prenzlauer Bergs attractions is a 19th-century brewery complex that is now the Kulturbrauerei culture centre. The district is well served by numerous tram and bus lines, the U2 underground, the S41/42 ring train and the S8 link overground train.
