Christianshavn

Description

In 1618 the King of Denmark, Christian IV, ordered a new district to be built and Christianshavn was founded in the eastern area of the city. Also known as the Amsterdam of Copenhagen, it is situated between the centre to the west and Amager to the east and is connected to the two by a series of bridges. Here youll find the real atmosphere provided by the canals and it is one of the most charming places in the city. The controversial Christiania, a free town with its own christiania-rules (for example cars are forbidden), is located here. Christianshavn is well connected to the rest of the city by both bus and underground. Plentiful supermarkets, a pleasant and quiet atmosphere, places to go out (Christania hosts frequent concerts) and the canals make it a good place to live.
