Lagos Island is the main island in Lagos city and is connected to the mainland by three bridges and to the neighbouring islands of Ikoyi to the east and Victoria to the south. It hosts the main government buildings and numerous shops and offices. The wealthy commercial area is on the western side of the island facing Apapa port across the harbour, while the poorer east contains the main markets and cheaper residential accommodation. The island is highly congested with people and traffic.
