Notting Hill

The neighbourhood is famous for the week-long multi-ethnic carnival which takes place in August, with processions, floats and music. This tradition is due mainly to the Caribbean immigrants that settled here in the past 50 years. But in the last decade the area has moved up-market. It is also invaded by tourists, who flock to the small Portobello antiques, books and clothing market. These attractions however haven't change the residential character of the neighbourhood, although it has become even more fashionable and rents have risen since the film of the same name starring Julie Roberts and Huge Grant. Not much peace and quiet here especially at carnival time, when many residents move out for the week. The underground Circle line connects the area to almost anywhere in the city.
