Brixton

Description

Last station on the Victoria line, Brixton also has a mainline railway station that has helped its integration into the rest of the city. It was once inhabited mainly by Indian and Caribbean immigrants who arrived in London in the 1960s and who have given it its characteristic multi-ethnic way of life. In the past it was the scene of violent clashes between its residents and the police, but it has now found a greater social harmony. It has become one of the fashionably cheap areas of London but the influx of new residents has led to a rise in the cost of real estate and the development of new residential areas. Transport within Brixton is often difficult and chaotic, but only three stops going north on the underground and you are in the heart of London. There are numerous ethnic shops and supermarkets.
